An earthquake of magnitude Mw 7.2 occurred on 04/04/2010 in Baja California, Mexico at 22:40 UTC (15:40 local time) about 33 km South-West of San Luis Rio Colorado. More information on the main shock is available here.

Pictures of the February 2003 field trip in the epicentral region of the 04/04/2010 earthquake collected by SHERPA

SHERPA (SHaring of Earthquake Rupture Pictures Archives) is a web application developped for collecting, sharing and archiving pictures taken by the seismologists after their field trips.

Few pictures of the Laguna Salada scarp taken in 2003, 50 km West of the epicentral region are available on SHERPA web site. Click on "Use without registration" and search pictures by authors. Select Author="L. Bollinger".

Explanations

In this region of Baja California, between the Gulf of California and the US-Mexican border, a system of major active faults (Imperial, Laguna Salada-Sierra el Mayor, Cerro Prieto) accomodate the deformation between Pacific and Northern American plate . This fault system produced significant earthquakes within the last 200 years, generating surface ruptures. Some well preserved fault scarps have been studied along the Laguna Salada fault (e.g. Mueller and Rockwell, 1995). Along this particular fault, well preserved fault scarps and displaced alluvial fan are mapped over 22 km. At the site where the photos are taken, entrenched stream channels are obliquely offset by 5m (3m of normal component, 4m of dextral component). Given the very good preservation of the fault scarp, its location and characteristics (amount of slip and extension), the 23 february 1892, M~7.2, earthquake appears to be a likely candidate to these surface ruptures.
