Earthquake details

An earthquake of magnitude 6.3 hit the Strait of Gibraltar, Alboran Sea on 25/01/2015 at 04:22 UTC (04:22 Morocco time; 05:22 Spain time). The epicenter was located 150 km east of Gibraltar, 86 km north of Melilla, 50 km north of Al Hoceima. More information on the main shock is available here. It has been followed by several aftershocks (see below), many of them have been also felt in Spain and in Morocco. 

The shake has been largely felt in southern Spain and in Northern Morocco. Some damage have been reported in Melilla by several eyewitnesses (see pictures below). If you have experienced this earthquake, you are invited to provide your testimoniy. This earthquake has been preceeded by a magnitude 5.0 foreshock on Thurday 21 January at 13:47 Morocco time, 14:47 Spain time.

 

12 years after 2004 Al Hoceima earthquake

This earthquake occurs almost 12 years after the 2004 Al Hoceima earthquake of magnitude 6.3 that struck northern Morocco on 24 February 2004 and caused more than 630 victims. The 2016 earthquake occurred 50 km north of 2004 Al Hoceima epicenter.
