Earthquake details

A major M7.7 earthquake hit Pakistan, Balochistan region, in Awaran district on Sept. 24th at 11:29 UTC (16:29 local time), 290km north of Karachi, in a mostly rural area. The earthquake was largely felt in Pakistan and as far as Sultanate of Oman, United Arab Emirates and India (New Dehli), 1,110 km away of the epicenter. Five M5 aftershocks have been recoded in the first 24 hours after the main shock.

The earthquake caused at least 350 victims as many houses were flattened in Awaran region.

Apparition of an island near the port of Gwadar

In the hours afters after the quake, witnesses noticed a small island had appeared in waters off the nearby port town of Gwadar. The island is up to 200m long and 100m wide, officials say (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-24222760). Temporary islands were formed near the time of the M8.1 1945 Makran earthquake. These islands have been attributed to mud volcano’s and were eroded below the sea level within a year.
