Earthquake details

An earthquake of magnitude 8.1 hit the Mexico's southern coast on the 8th September 2017 at 04:49 UTC (Thrusday 7 September at 23h49 in local time). The epicentre was 98 km southwest of the town of Pijijiapan. More information on the main shock is available here.

It has been largely felt in Guatemala City at 350 km and more than 1000 km away from the epicenter in Mexico city. At the time of this report, three victims are reported in Chiapas, maybe one more in Guatemala. The international airport and some hospitals are damaged in Mexico City.

The last Mexico earthquake occurred in the context of a Subduction Zone. In this case the Cocos plate is subducted beneath North American plate producing large earthquakes on the region. The epicenter of this earthquake occurred offshore, reason why a tsunami alert was launched in the Pacific. At the moment of this report, only moderate tsunami arrivals were reported.
